Why You Should Consider Liposuction
Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic body enhancement procedures for both women and men. Liposuction is a safe and effective aesthetic surgical procedure designed to remove excess fat deposits and to contour the body.
As a cosmetic fat reduction and body contouring procedure, liposuction is a safe surgical procedure that has been available for 30+ years.
Board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Thomas Leach, reassures patients that the proven safety record, minimal scarring, and outstanding results have made it the preferred method for removing fat from the hips, thighs, buttocks, and midriff, as well as areas of the face, neck, and arms. Liposuction is not an alternative to weight reduction but can be highly effective in removing fat from areas that do not respond to diet and exercise programs.

Who Is a Candidate for Liposuction?
Dr. Leach advises his patients that not everyone is a candidate for liposuction. Ideal candidates are those individuals who are not obese and are within their normal weight or are moderately overweight. The best candidate for liposuction is one who has areas of excess fat deposits that despite diet and exercise do not budge. The following areas can be treated with liposuction:
- Abdomen
- Ankles
- Arms
- Buttocks
- Chin
- Flanks (love handles)
- Knees
- Hips
- Male chest (Gynecomastia)
- Neck
- Thighs (inner/outer)
What Are the Different Types of Liposuction Technology?
As previously mentioned, liposuction technology has evolved over the years improving its effectiveness and safety. The most popular and effective include:
- Tumescent Liposuction is often referred to as the “gold standard” of liposuction for several reasons. General anesthesia is not needed due to the tumescent solution that is injected with contains lidocaine, a local anesthetic used to numb the targeted area(s) prior to undergoing liposuction. This increases the safety of the procedure. The tumescent solution also contains saline and epinephrine (adrenaline) which constricts blood vessels in the area begin treated so the amount of bleeding is lessened. After the swelling and bruising has dissipated, optimal results can be seen in the form of reduced and natural-looking contours. This technique not only improves the results but also allows us to do most of these procedures in the office
- Laser Liposuction (Smartlipo) is a minimally invasive technology using laser energy to heat the excess sub-cutaneous fat pockets. Smartlipo is different from traditional laser-assisted liposuction as it not only liquefies fat in target areas but uses another type of wavelength which tightens tissues and skin in the area, as well as increasing collagen production.
Recovery varies from patient-to-patient, but most patients can return to work after a few days. Dr. Leach will frequently perform the surgery in the office on Wednesday or Thursday and the patients will be back to work the following Monday. Liposuction patients can expect to experience some bruising and tenderness in the treatment area, but these will be temporary. Most patients are back to work within a week and body shaping changes can be seen within days after the surgery. Final results will be seen after several weeks.
Once removed, fat cells do not grow back, meaning the results are permanent so long as you maintain your weight.
